According to Forbes, cybersecurity researchers, including Rocky Cole of the iVerify initiative, detected abnormal settings changes on two iPhones belonging to senior campaign officials.
The nature of these changes indicated possible infection of the devices.
The investigation indicates that Salt Typhoon, a Chinese hacking group affiliated with China’s state security service, may have used access to the networks of major carriers such as AT&T and Verizon to carry out the attack.
Sources claim that the surveillance targets could be representatives of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris’ campaigns.
If the suspicions are confirmed, this would constitute a serious security breach. Hacking an iPhone gives attackers access to a wide range of data: calls, messages, encrypted communications and confidential information.
