Today, November 11, the final episode of the HBO series Penguin was released.

This is a spin-off of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, a more down-to-earth version of the superhero. The series continues this path and has grown into a serious work in itself. This is not a “Marvel fan” movie, so don’t rush to close this review.

After watching the last episode, I was surprised that almost no one I knew had either heard about this series or hadn’t watched it after the controversial film with Robert Pattinson. Let’s fix this.

A serious story of the development of one of the main villains of “Batman”

What is the series about?: After the death of mafia boss Carmine Falcone, his right-hand man Oswald “Penguin” Cobblepot decides that he will take his boss’s place. But Falcone still has a daughter.

Sofia, who is not ready to give up her criminal respect for her father. A bloody battle for power erupts in Gotham’s criminal underworld.

Colin Farrell, who played the role of Oswald Coblepot (Penguin), became one of the main highlights of the project. His character is not only interesting to follow, but you get into him from the first minutes. Insane charisma coupled with an amazing atmosphere for the title of falling in love with the local universe.

Throughout the season, we see how Oz becomes the most iconic comic book villain.

Taking place each week following the finale of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Gotham is set against a series of floods that have left poor neighborhoods dilapidated and wealthy neighborhoods largely untouched. The cataclysms also affected the local criminal world, and the head of the Falcone map was also killed by Catwoman.

Almost immediately, a “vacant position” appeared, which was claimed not only by the heir, but also by our anti-hero with incredible ambitions.

Farrell’s character is different from other variations of the Penguin. He was not raised by birds, as was the case in Batman Returns, and he is not crazy and frail, as in Gotham. And he didn’t inspire fear in Matt Reeves, because he was Falcone’s assistant (albeit an important one). Now things are starting to change and Penguin is showing his true colors.

The authors of the game did a great job with the character of Oz Cobb. With each new episode, he revealed a new side to the viewer. Where you already knew what to expect, the crime is committed completely differently. And there is only one question left in your head – does Penguin have a red line and when will it come?

Considering his difficult and, in its own way, crazy childhood, you imagine the villain as either a maniac or a calculating person. But I never develop, I can’t say that he is a man of honor. Yes, he has his own code; in many of his decisions and actions he resembles Tony Soprano from a similar game.

However, this is still a different character, although there are similarities in the form of an always scolding mother, lack of love, problems and hidden secrets from childhood and past, showing himself to be an alpha male.

The hero himself grows above himself and becomes better. With the help of her closest friend, Vika played the role of Renzi Felisa, who also suffered from the negative consequences of the catastrophic floods in Gotham. The duo with Ikh Farrell is one of the authors of the entire game. Both characters develop and change towards the end, and you warm up to each of them almost immediately. And how the ending changes the whole situation…

This is a crime story, and there is a lot of gang warfare.

What’s most interesting is that the focus in “Penguin” is not on the action component. First of all, we are talking about showdowns between the ruling families and behind-the-scenes games.

The presentation of materials in some places is reminiscent of David Fincher with his earthiness and delivery on the seriousness of what is happening. There is no hyperbole in the style of typical comic book movies. All characters are living people. With your assets, people and desires. There is no fantasy here. And thanks to this alone, “Penguin” can be considered an independent movie, in which you do not need to know the history of the “Batman” universe and the AC characters. But those who know her will also have their own pleasant bonuses.

In the foreground here is a story about the formation of the criminal world without a superhero background. This is a cruel world where everyone works hard and for a long time to achieve their goal, and does not get everything at once.

Here, each character has their own motivation. Nobody does anything “just because.” Each goal has its own reasons, and they do not look feigned. It is especially interesting to watch the confrontation between Sofia and Oza, as well as what is happening in the Falcone family.

And even the gloomy Colin Farrell is not put off. This is an amazing actor who can demonstrate a wide range of emotions even behind a ton of makeup, and he proves this once again in the series.

I could rant about Penguin for a long time. But why? Then the spoilers are tightened.

For me personally, this series became one of the main revelations of the fall of 2024. And the audience, judging by the ratings (8.8 on iMDB and 91% on Rotten Tomatoes), agrees with me.
