A sharp rise in red caviar prices in Russia on the eve of the New Year is unlikely, said German Zverev, president of the All-Russian Association of Fisheries Enterprises, Entrepreneurs and Exporters (VARPE). In his opinion, the increase in prices could cause a serious drop in demand.

In conversation with TASS, the head of the fishing association explained that red caviar prices have a seasonality associated with the salmon fishing period. And Christmas demand has minimal impact on sales prices.
“The price increase in the wholesale and retail segments for the New Year can only be due to urgent demand. However, given current inflation and the real disposable income of the population, I doubt that will happen,” Zverev said.
As one industry representative noted, “retailers and wholesalers understand” that rising prices could collapse product sales.
Zverev denies the risk of a shortage of red caviar in Russia before the New Year: according to VARPE estimates, 11-12 thousand tons of caviar will be produced in 2024, which corresponds to the average annual consumption of the product in the country.
At the same time, the head of VARPE warned Russians not to buy fakes or fakes from scammers who could take advantage of the information agenda on red caviar prices.
