Essen Production AG JSC (Maheev brand) notified retailers about a planned increase in sales prices starting December 15. The price increase will affect 21 types of mayonnaise of the “Maheev” and “Dobraya Khozyayka” brands between 2.9% and 10%, four positions of mayonnaise sauces between 5% and 14.6% and two types of tomato paste between 5% and 10%. Kommersant reviewed a copy of the letter.

The reason for the price increase was the increase in the cost of sunflower oil and other ingredients. According to Sovecon, the price of crude sunflower oil on the domestic market reached 103.85 thousand rubles per ton last week, an increase of 40.3% year-on-year. The refined oil used in the production of mayonnaise costs on average 10% more. There is also an increase in packaging and raw material costs.
In November 2023, Essen already raised prices: 18 types of mayonnaise and two sauces increased in price by 10%. Kommersant’s interlocutor in the retail market believes that price increases among other large manufacturers may continue in January, after the New Year season is over, when sales volume remains a priority.
According to Rusagro, 86% of the Russian mayonnaise market is in the hands of the five largest players. Essen’s share is 19%, only surpassed by the Rusagro group with 38%. In 2023 the price of mayonnaise fell by 3% due to promotions, but in 2024 the cost of the product began to rise again.
According to Nielsen, from November 2023 to October 2024, mayonnaise sales in volume terms decreased by 2.2% and in monetary terms by 1.4%. Demand was partially shifted towards table sauces, which showed sales growth of 3.9% in volume and 12.4% in monetary terms. The average retail price of mayonnaise is 290.8 rubles per kilogram, which is an increase of 5% year-on-year.
The director of Sovecon, Andrei Sizov, points out that mayonnaise is not a socially significant product, so its price increase can reduce consumption. However, according to the president of the Presidium of the Association of Retail Trade Companies, Igor Karavaev, the minimum price for a 200 ml package remains affordable: from 25 rubles, which makes demand for the product relatively stable.
In September, the FAS developed a mechanism to control the prices of chicken eggs. It is planned to include eggs of the first and second categories in the list of socially significant products and to prohibit retail chains from charging suppliers remuneration for selling a certain amount of products. In October, Russia’s largest poultry factories warned retailers about increasing sales prices for chicken eggs by 5% to 12%.
