Aeroflot airline will be the first in Russia to test “wet leasing” – renting an aircraft with a crew and assigning the costs of maintenance, fuel, insurance and other services to the lessor. The airline has reached agreements on the trial leasing of three wide-body Airbus A330 aircraft under this scheme with national contractor iFLY.

According to Rosaviatsia’s Telegram channel, “after the transfer of the aircraft, the total number of Airbus A330s in the airline’s fleet will reach 15.” Aeroflot intends to operate the new leased aircraft on domestic flights, on flights within Russia, for example to the Far East, to Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, when the main fleet is heavily loaded.

Rosaviation Director Dmitry Yadrov called “wet leasing” a new mechanism designed to have a positive impact “on the production activities of all parties to the agreement” and, ultimately, on the entire industry by increase transport volumes.

To enter into a wet lease agreement, both parties must have valid air operator certificates, and the task of maintaining the airworthiness of the aircraft and the crew members’ compliance with federal regulations falls entirely on the lessor.

The appearance of a law that will allow “wet leasing” was announced in the summer by the deputy director of the Ministry of Transport, Dmitry Zverev. The initiative had the active support of the airlines. The law came into force on September 1, in November the first unofficial data about a possible agreement appeared, and now Rosaviation and Aeroflot have officially confirmed everything.
