The unknown follower alert feature on Android recently received two important new updates; make it easy to detect such Bluetooth device nearby. The improvements were announced by Google on Wednesday (11).
One of the new features is the possibility to temporarily pause the sending of location updates to the “Find My Device” network if a compatible and unrecognized tracker is detected. The mobile phone will stop sharing data for up to 24 hours.
According to the Mountain View giant, this add-on provides an extra layer of privacy and control. Preventing the person using the tag to track your steps from knowing your location. Additionally, the user will save several hours to physically locate and disable the device.
The second update to Android’s unknown tracker alert introduces the option to enable the “Find Nearby” function to find the unwanted tag when a notification is received. The smartphone will direct the user to the device and guide them through the process of disabling the device.
Abuse of trackers is on the rise
Updates to Android’s unknown Bluetooth tracking alert come at a time when misuse of these devices is on the rise. As stated by thresholdstalkers and domestic abusers use technology to track their targets’ every step.
Last year, Apple was the target of a class-action lawsuit in which it was accused of contributing to stalkers using AirTags to track their victims. The case cites some cases that ended tragically, resulting in the murder of people monitored through technology.
Faced with recurring incidents, manufacturers have invested in tools to combat tracking through trackers. In early 2024, Apple and Google released a new industry specification called “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers” that strengthens security for iOS and Android users.
