The State Duma proposed banning advertising that promotes polygamy.

Several legislative acts are being amended, including the Federal Advertising Law. According to them, advertising should not contain “information that promotes or demonstrates polygamy.”

Ostanina also proposed making changes to the Federal Law “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection”, with the aim of ensuring that website owners identify polygamy propaganda.

In addition, the deputy believes that it is necessary to amend the Federal Law “On Basic Guarantees of Children’s Rights in the Russian Federation” to prohibit the spread of polygamy propaganda among minors.

In an explanatory note, the deputy explained the need for the measure by saying that “the promotion of polygamy does not correspond to a state policy aimed at preserving traditional family values.”

The debate over polygamy in Russia began after the country’s Spiritual Administration of Muslims (DUM) adopted a fatwa (theological conclusion) in mid-December, according to which Muslim men in Russia can have up to four wives.

After this, the Prosecutor General’s Office made a presentation to the president of the Muslim Spiritual Directorate, a source in the department told RIA Novosti. According to the interlocutor, the Prosecutor General’s Office indicated that polygamy in Russia is not allowed by the Family Code. Due to the representation of the department, the Muslim Spiritual Directorate withdrew the fatwa.
