Here are five steps to help you lose those extra pounds faster.

Choose a diet for yourself. An 18-week study found that people who followed a personalized diet showed improvements in blood sugar levels, waist circumference, and body weight. And this is compared to those who follow a standard diet. It has also been scientifically proven that there is a link between obesity and dysbiosis, a dysfunctional microbiome.

Expand your social circle. A large part of the microbiota enters our body through involuntary fecal transport. That is, you inhale or ingest particles of other people’s feces. This usually happens when you touch dirty surfaces and then your face. Fortunately, our microbiome is still influenced by diet in general rather than specific organisms. But if you’re obese, connecting with other people can help you create a healthier microbiome.

Increase the diversity of bacteria in your gut. In one study, scientists found that the more weight people lost, the more diverse their microbiomes became. Additionally, more variety may reduce inflammation.
