SpaceX has long been preparing for Starship’s first orbital test flight, but this important milestone may be delayed again. Super Heavy exploded at the company’s plant in Boca Chica, Texas. According to NASA Spaceflight, which uploaded a video of the incident, the booster ignited while SpaceX was testing its Raptor engines. As Gizmodo points out, the current Booster 7 prototype has 33 Raptor 2 engines.
Elon Musk said in a tweet that there was an accident and that the team is assessing the damage. This issue is specific to engine testing. In the future, the company will not test launch all 33 engines at the same time.
Several Starship rocket prototypes exploded in the past for various reasons before the company finally had its first successful launch and landing in May 2021. Some of the boosters exploded during ground tests, while others caught fire after Starship it had already landed from its test flights. It wasn’t just exploding starships that contributed to the delay in Super Heavy’s orbital test flight: the company’s plans were also delayed by regulatory approval. For example, the FAA has continued to expand its environmental review of the SpaceX spaceport in Boca Chica. Without this permission, the company cannot launch a starship from the facility. The agency finally approved a final environmental assessment for Starship’s launch from Boca Chica in June.
