Hackers exploited a weakness in third-party software used by the department and provided by BeyondTrust, which helps manage remote access to systems. Nearly 400 computers were hacked, and hackers gained access to confidential files, including 50 files on Yellen’s own computer.

The attack follows a larger, ongoing cyberattack in which Chinese hackers targeted US telecommunications and stole sensitive information. These attacks, called Operation Salt Typhoon, were aimed at gaining access to the personal data and communications of key government figures. Hackers exploited vulnerabilities in network hardware and software to achieve their goals.
