Silicon photonics is a technology that uses silicon as a conductor for optical signals, enabling more energy-efficient and lower-cost solutions for transmitting data over long distances. In an environment where the demand for artificial intelligence technologies is increasing, the importance of reducing energy consumption becomes especially important.

Huang noted that the results of this partnership may take a few years to show up, as both companies have significant work to do before real advances in this field emerge. To participate in this process, TSMC and local chip packaging and testing service provider ASE Technology formed the Silicon Photonics Alliance (SiPhIA), which brings together more than 30 Taiwanese companies.
