In a new study, researchers found that boys who participate in organized sports are almost 15 percent more likely to earn a high school diploma by age 20. For female athletes, the rate was 7% higher and they tended to get higher grades.
To conduct the study, researchers examined the types of sports and physical activities that 12-year-olds participated in and compared them to the participants’ later academic achievement.
It was revealed that girls participating in organized sports scored 8% higher overall, while girls participating in artistic sports scored almost 23% higher. At the same time, girls who participated in unstructured physical activity had their academic performance decrease by almost 8% by age 18.
Both girls and boys were more likely to graduate from high school by age 20 when they played sports with a coach.
