As a part of the new study, experts examined how empathy reactions in adolescents (10-19 years) were different from young people (20-40 years) and the elderly (60+ years). To do this, when people examined photos of people with social or physical pain, they recorded the activity of the brain of the participants.

It turned out that the reactions of the brain to painful situations increased in people from adolescence to young and older ages. This means that empathy develops throughout life as a person gains more social experience.

At the same time, the increasing brain activity of the elderly was accompanied by the worst pain assessments among others. The reason for this is more difficult to express empathy for others compared to young people.
