The annual marathon, which began in 1999, inspired hundreds of thousands of writers around the world to write a draft of the novel for November, but in recent years it has become deadly for a non -profit organization. Financial problems have been harassed by Nanowrimo for the last six years – the lack of funds has become a common disaster for many cultural projects. However, public disagreements were a real coup. In 2023, the moderator of the youth program was accused of inappropriate behaviors asking questions to the safety of the platform. And in 2024, the organization took a controversial position on artificial intelligence (AI), saying that the condemnation of its use in my writing was “class and discriminatory tones”. This caused an anger storm: Famous writers left the board of directors and the community left.
In a letter to Nanowrimo, the participants admitted that they could not meet the expectations. The closing was a surprise, but not the end of the story: the tradition of writing a novel for a month can continue unofficially.
