Zinc porphyrin oligomers, known as “luminous molecules ,, have already been used for diagnosis and treatment in medicine and in organic electronics. Scientists have found that their brightness depends on the length of the molecular chain. Short chains (two connections) spread only 1% of the possible light, as energy is rapidly active. Middle (3-4 connections) reduces heat losses and reaches 41% of efficiency. Very long (five connections) loses its brightness again due to overheating.

This discovery allows you to configure the glow of molecules for specific tasks. For example, infrared radiation better penetrates better than fabrics that are important for medical visualization. In electronics, such structures can be used for flexible OLED screens, optical sensors or elements of solar panels.

The study was carried out with Tomsk State University scientists. The results were published in the journal of chemical physics letters.
