Researchers at Curtin University analyzed 271 songs released between 1999 and 2014. Scientists have looked specifically at how easily and quickly the brain can process a song. So the words were processed by a computer program.

It turns out that the easier the brain perceives the lyrics of the song, the more popular it is. At the same time, “simple” songs both quickly became popular and quickly left the charts.

In general, the two main “components” of a popular song are more consonant rhymes (“earth” – “ship”) and more legible lyrics.
