Twitter is looking at introducing an auction for the sale of unique usernames, which will become an additional source of revenue for the company. Telegram has already acted in a similar way, selling usernames for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Twitter is considering the introduction of an auction for the sale of unique nicknames

The New York Times reports on Twitter’s intention to start selling unique nicknames at auction to boost its own revenue, citing sources.

According to the newspaper, the social network is considering selling only really rare and valuable usernames, for which it can get a substantial amount of money. It’s now forbidden to sell nicknames on Twitter, but hackers do it by hacking into accounts with weird usernames and selling them.

In late 2022, Elon Musk announced the removal of 1.5 billion inactive accounts that had not logged in for several years and had not posted from them.

Telegram has already launched an auction site for the sale of unique usernames. In November, the username @news sold on Fragment for a record 994,000 TON, or $1.76 million at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of publication.
