GitHub is celebrating this week 100 million people reached the developer target on the platform. The celebration for the site was doubled, because the goal was not only achieved, but also conquered ahead of schedule. Initially, the company had predicted that it would reach this number only in 2025.

“We are happy to share that there are officially over 100 million developers using GitHub to create, maintain and contribute software projects, which places a huge responsibility on us to continue to put developers first,” said Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub. .

And Brazil has been a key region in achieving this goal, as it is one of the countries with the most sign-ups for the platform. Our nation is the third fastest growing outside of the US on GitHub, reaching three million developers, after India and China alone. Last year saw significant growth here, adding 924,000 new Brazilian developers.

Changes as the GitHub community grows

According to information from the platform, almost a third of GitHub users in 2015 were from North America. The fastest growth today is in South America, Southeast Asia and Africa.

Diversity has increased not only in where people come from, but also in the types of developers who have signed up to the platform. We were mostly software developers for technology companies, but now we have people from different sectors working with code in their spare time and contributing to projects.

“Currently, developers write code, contribute documentation, and come up with new solutions to solve new problems globally, for example, working to create software for hospitals, film production, and even NASA and the PyTorch project that powers artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning applications. ,” Dohmke added.
