The Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency are said to have “explicit authority to require disclosure of information on emissions and energy use by cryptominers.” The Democrats urgently asked them to introduce a mandatory disclosure regime.

The Verge notes that while there is no concrete data on how much emissions are generated from the activities of crypto miners in the US, initial estimates are “surprising.” According to a September White House report, the country’s crypto industry operations likely consume as much electricity as all home computers in the United States combined.
