On March 20, the 10th annual World Happiness Report was released, stating that COVID-19 pandemic it did not affect our general happiness.

The 2023 report released today shows that self-reported levels of happiness have been “surprisingly resilient”, with global averages between 2020 and 2022 as high as those reported before the pandemic.

The annual World Happiness Report uses data from studies such as the Gallup World Poll, which collects about 1,000 life assessments in each of the 137 participating countries to determine an overall ranking.

The self-assessments are divided into six key factors: social support, income, health, freedom, generosity, and absence of corruption, to help determine how and why the results differ in each country. The final happiness ratings are based on a three-year lifetime average of those ratings.

The Scandinavian countries are back in the lead:

Finland continues to take first place for the sixth year in a row with a result that is well ahead of all other countries. Denmark remains in 2nd place, with an area of confidence limited to 2nd and 4th. Among the rest of the top twenty countries, trusted regions for their ranks cover five to ten countries. Iceland ranks 3rd and with its smaller sample size it has a confidence interval of 2nd to 7th. Israel is in 4th place, up five places from last year, with a confidence range between 2nd and 8th. Positions 5 to 8 are occupied by the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland.

Rounding out the top ten are Luxembourg and New Zealand. Austria and Australia remain in 11th and 12th positions, as they were last year, both within a likely range of 8 to 16. Canada follows them, two positions higher than last year’s lowest ranking. The next four positions are occupied by Ireland, the United States, Germany and Belgium, all of which are solidly in the top twenty, as evidenced by the rank ranges.

Costa Rica first in Latin America

In Latin America, Costa Rica is ranked 23rd as the happiest place in the region, followed by Uruguay at 28th.

Chile at 35th and Mexico at 36th are still in Latin America. Nicaragua rounds out an outstanding podium in 40th position.

On the negative side, the most unfortunate are Sierra Leone, Lebanon and the worst – Afghanistan.
