According to our colleagues at Forbes, the company is building its own Content Delivery Network (CDN), a geographically distributed network of servers that store popular copies of content such as videos and games.

Installing caching servers will help insure against a possible increase in traffic on the platform and reduce the cost of content delivery. In 2022, the daily viewership of VK services increased by almost 20% to 73 million users, and social network traffic more than doubled.

The creation of a CDN service is considered a preventive measure if YouTube is blocked, since in this case VK will experience a huge increase in traffic. YouTube currently accounts for about 35% of all traffic in Russia.

At the same time, VK actively attracts popular Russian-speaking bloggers from YouTube in order to increase video traffic. As YouTube deprives Russian creators of monetization, local platforms are increasingly investing in attracting creators.
