The NYPD has been criticized for using robot dogs in 2020 and 2021 due to concerns about surveillance and weapon use. The Boston Dynamics contract was canceled after the criticism, but Mayor Eric Adams has now said the city will use them in life-threatening situations like the bomb threat. The NYPD will buy two robot dogs for $750,000, they won’t be equipped with facial recognition technology.

The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (STOP), a group that opposes the use of local and state surveillance, denounced Mayor Adams’ move, saying the NYPD had “turned bad science fiction into terrible policing.” HE “New York deserves real security, not a fake RoboCop. Spending public money to violate the privacy of New Yorkers is a dangerous police game.”.
