It’s worth noting that the bill has yet to be sent to the governor for final approval, but the chance of it being rejected is virtually zero (the governor has been outspoken against TikTok in the past and has even banned it on government-issued devices). When the bill becomes law, it will go into effect on January 1, 2024, and ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, will be banned from operating in Montana.

Fortunately, the penalties will not apply to the users themselves, but to ByteDance or the app store from which the app was downloaded, including the Apple and Google stores.

The bill will expire “if a federal ban is placed on TikTok or the app cuts its ties with China.”
