The report says Chromebooks don’t last as long as they should, Google halts updates after five to eight years, and devices are hampered by a lack of spare parts and designs that prevent repairs.
They stated that the planned obsolescence strategy punishes “the people and the whole world”.
The report says that the 31 million Chromebooks sold worldwide in the first year of the epidemic emit about 9 million tons of CO2, and that doubling the lifespan of laptops could save taxpayers up to $1.8 billion.
The group urges Google to extend support to 10 years after the launch date and to develop devices that last even longer.
