Scientists from the American Carnegie Mellon Society note the increased attention to the keyboard for smartphones, which may be hiding in a flat OLED screen.
They designed a backing that rotates under the display. With the help of miniature hydraulic pumps, the liquid inside the substrate can be lifted up to 5 mm, revealing a bulge on the screen. Its strength is enough to withstand touching the display.
This composition can be used not only to create a convex keyboard, but also to interact with the system. This video measures how the raised bars and buttons work in iOS.
So far, this is only a prototype that needs to be finalized to reduce the size of the structure. But it is already clear that the technology has every chance to appear in the future on the iPhone and other smartphones. [TechCrunch]
