After examining data from a systematic review, the World Health Organization concluded that sugar-free sweeteners do not significantly reduce weight or body fat in adults or children. More than that, this review showed that these sweeteners could potentially lead to an increased risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes. They also increase the likelihood of death.
New WHO guidelines state that sugar-free sweeteners are any type that is not classified as sugar. Natural, calorie-free, including synthetic sweeteners. Examples of such sweeteners include acesulfame K, aspartame, advantam, cyclamates, neotame, saccharin, sucralose, stevia, and stevia derivatives. The same list includes products with similar ingredients. For example, diet soda or sugar-free products.
