The Ministry of Industry and Trade will allow the import of contact lenses to Russia under the parallel import scheme. This was reported by the department to the RBC publication. We are talking about three brands: Johnson & Johnson, Alcon Laboratories and Bausch & Lomb.
“This measure will be preventive, with the goal of unconditionally providing these products to the Russian market,” the ministry explained, noting that the practice of issuing licenses for such products during the sanctions period has not yet been formed.
Earlier, Kommersant FM reported that Johnson & Johnson (maker of Acuvue Oasys and Acuvue True Eyes lenses) notifies Russian partners of the termination of supplies of this product to the country. This decision is due to new US Department of Commerce restrictions on importing products into the Russian Federation.
Following this, the Ministry of Industry and Trade stated that Russian factories have the capacity to ensure that the country is provided with intraocular lenses.
Johnson & Johnson products account for more than half (51%) of the Russian contact lens market, according to data from the Belure Group. CooperVision, in turn, provides 11%, Bausch & Lomb 15%. Thus, 77% of the market falls on US brands.
