An alleged monopoly lawsuit against Apple by the U.S. Department of Justice and 16 state and district attorneys general reveals information we didn’t know about the company’s plans and products until now. One of them is related to Apple Watch incompatibility with Androidwhich is one of the reasons why the company is accused of controlling the smartphone market.

The lawsuit, in particular, clarifies that the company from Cupertino forces users to buy an iPhone if they want to use an Apple Watch, since the watch is not compatible with Android devices. “If Apple can direct a user to purchase an Apple Watch, it will become more expensive for that user to buy a different type of smartphone because it would require the user to ditch their expensive Apple Watch and buy a new smartwatch that is compatible with Android.” they emphasize.

In response, Apple stated that They worked for three years in making Apple Watch compatible with smartphones other than iPhone. However, they claim that this ultimately proved impossible due to “technical limitations.”

Apple hasn’t provided more details on this, but it’s likely that watchOS will be syncing with iOS; Well, all applications available on the watch work together with applications on the iPhone.

Incompatibility with Apple Watch on Android is just a small part

The lawsuit, of course, accuses more than just Apple of having a monopoly on the Apple Watch’s incompatibility with Android. The company was also charged with inability to download applications outside the App Store – This problem was solved in Europe thanks to the Digital Markets Act, as well as by blocking cloud gaming applications.

The US Department of Justice also accuses Apple of do not open the iPhone’s NFC chip and Apple Watch to ensure compatibility wallets from third parties, as well as limit the quality of communication messages between iPhone and Android. In the latter case, the company several months ago confirmed its intention to implement the RCS protocol within this year.
