The fact that there is life beyond Samsung and Xiaomi, we have already been convinced of this more than once thanks to brands such as Nothing, Oppo, Honor or Realme. But there is a manufacturer who is also ready to offer users an alternative that is attractive not only in price and capabilities, but also in design. The Motorola Edge 50 Pro offers a distinctive and very brand-specific design, a telephoto camera, a screen with specs we usually see in high-end handsets, and a Qualcomm processor aimed at the mid-range. All this for 700 euros.

The best of Motorola Edge 50 Pro

There is no doubt that one of the most striking features of the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is its design. And, especially, his rear. The company has chosen various finishing options in which stands out one from real wood – although treated to prevent damage over time -. Not only does this make the Edge 50 Pro unique from other smartphones, but it also makes each device of the same model look completely different as no piece of wood follows the same pattern.

It feels like holding a piece of this material: it is soft, very soft, and the slightly curved brushed aluminum frames make the grip much more comfortable.

It’s convenient, but is it beautiful? It depends on your tastes. In my opinion, the wooden back of the smartphone is a bit ostentatious. What also confuses me is that the photo module also has the same finish. Despite this, there is no doubt that this is something very amazing. Additionally, for those of us who prefer a more understated design, Motorola is selling other variants of the Edge 50 Pro in vegan leather and different colors, including one in collaboration with Pantone.

Screen with its pros and cons

The design is complemented by an excellent screen, one of the best we’ve seen in this price range. Specifically, the Edge 50 Pro mounts the panel. 6.7″ P-OLED with Full HD+ resolution and 165 Hz refresh rate. It’s bright, extremely sharp and very colorful. The high refresh rate also makes for a slightly better experience navigating the interface, although it’s true that the difference isn’t that big compared to the 120Hz on other phones.

Of course, the screen has a small disadvantage: its curvature. Motorola has chosen to include curved glass around the edges, which, although it creates a sense of depth when using the smartphone, is more of a hassle for several reasons. On the one hand, this creates a kind of shading when the panel reproduces white tones. On the other hand, it is somewhat annoying when performing certain actions. For example, it is almost impossible to change the size of widgets, since the point that allows you to expand or contract the widget is located precisely in the curvature area.

What you shouldn’t overlook about the Motorola Edge 50 Pro

The camera is another interesting feature of the Motorola Edge 50 Pro. Mainly due to its configuration. The Motorola smartphone is equipped with a triple lens, the sensor of which the main thing is 50 megapixels. It is accompanied by a second 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, as well as a third sensor, in this case a 10-megapixel telephoto lens capable of taking photos with 3x optical zoom.

This is a good camera; very good when lighting conditions are acceptable. The results generally have correct color interpretation, sufficient exposure and good detail. However, this camera doesn’t stand out among its competitors. This, of course, does not mean that it is bad, not at all. But it is true that there are other mobile phones (such as the Pixel 8, available for 600 euros) that offer better results.

Where is the Motorola Edge 50 Pro now? the breast is in the telephoto lens. The 10-megapixel sensor does an excellent job of producing colourful, highly vibrant images with convincing detail. Let us remind you that this sensor can shoot with an optical zoom of up to three times, but also allows a 30x digital crop, in case we need it in an emergency, although, as usual, a lot of detail is usually lost.

Aside from the telephoto lens, there’s one more thing I liked about the Edge 50 Pro’s camera: its versatility. Motorola has included various modes and features in its app that are quite useful, such as a mode for taking still photos or a rather intuitive Pro mode.

Speaking of Motorola’s proprietary camera app, it’s also worth mentioning the Edge 50 Pro’s software. It’s the sort of personalization layer that runs on Android 14, but it’s largely devoid of any additions from the brand. The interface is essentially very similar to Pure Android. (for Android Pixel), which is welcome. It also has a lot of customization options and is quite flexible.

How’s the performance and battery?

The Motorola terminal is equipped with a processor Snapdragon 7 3rd generation from the American Qualcomm, which is accompanied by 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal memory. And it works quite well. It allows you to run any app or game smoothly, and we didn’t notice any significant glitches or slowdowns during our tests.

Regarding autonomy; no complaints. 4500 mAh They behave quite well, although in moments of more intensive use I needed a little more capacity. In any case, the terminal is equipped with a 125 W charger.

Value?

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro is a mobile phone with a unique design, an excellent screen despite the lack of curvature, and a camera that, although not on par with other mobile phones in this price range, does what it needs in terms of versatility. However, Is it worth paying 700 euros for this mobile?

If you are looking for a mobile phone with a unique look and excellent multimedia hardware, the Edge 50 Pro is a very good option. However, I would wait for its price to drop a bit – most likely this will happen in the coming months. In any case, we must not forget that there are currently very attractive options available at a lower price than this. One of them is Nothing Phone (2), which also has a completely different design; It can be purchased for approximately 550 euros. The same can be said for the Pixel 8, which can be purchased for around 600 euros.
