Qualcomm is capitalizing on the growing interest in artificial intelligence by announcing its latest smartphone chip. Qualcomm’s processor Snapdragon 7s 3rd generation supports generative AI capabilities and multiple large language models (LLM) to help mid-range devices compete with their flagship counterparts, which are increasingly using AI as a major selling point.

Qualcomm’s general manager of mobile phones, Chris Patrick, confirmed the company’s intention to release the chip in a press release, saying:

“Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 will bring the best of the 7 series to more mid-range devices, taking key 7 series features, including on-device AI support, and delivering the best mobile experience for consumers at all price points.”

In addition to AI capabilities, the 4nm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor delivers significant performance improvements over the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, including a 20% faster CPU, a 40% faster Adreno GPU, and 100% faster AI speeds (30% faster). Qualcomm also expects a 45% increase in processor efficiency. In terms of connectivity, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 features 5G, dual-SIM support, Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4.

Other interesting features include Snapdragon Sound with AptX Lossless, spatial audio with head tracking, and Qualcomm Aqstic Hi-Fi DAC. On the hardware side, it supports 144Hz refresh rate displays, multiple cameras, 4K video, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4 battery charging technology.

Qualcomm claims that Samsung, Realme, Xiaomi and Sharp are using the new chip and will release devices with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 before the end of the year. Xiaomi is expected to release its first phone with the chip in September.
