According to the Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) NASAa asteroid giant will pass near Earth on Friday (27). said space rock 7335 (1989 JA) travels about 76 thousand km / h and there are approx. 1.8 thousand kilometers in diameter — Four times the size of the Empire State Building in New York.

Despite NASA’s classification of the asteroid as potentially dangerous, the rocky object will pass within 4 million kilometers of Earth, about 10 times the average distance from our planet to the moon. If the orbit of the asteroid changes, the path may change and affect our planet and is therefore considered dangerous.

After May 27, 2022, the object will not travel close to Earth until June 12, 2055, traveling much farther than current travel, about 27 million kilometers from our planet. The asteroid was first observed in 1989 at the Palomar Observatory in San Diego (California).

7335 is also classified as a Near-Earth Object (NEO), which are objects that pass about 48 million kilometers from Earth. NASA tracks more than 29,000 asteroids close to our planet each year, but most of them are extremely small.

The object could also be classified as Apollo, a category of about 15,000 asteroids that orbit the sun and periodically traverse the orbit of our planet.

In 2021, NASA embarked on the Dual Asteroid Orientation Test (DART) mission to change the orbital path of the asteroid Dimorphos and understand the likelihood of these changes in possible collision scenarios with Earth.
