Juniper Networks is one of the giants of the network market. The company, which has grown by offering products to its customers in the telecom market, is undergoing a transformation and slowly but surely becoming a company that large companies and organizations can go for a complete network.

Juniper is actually known for its switches and routing products, in this segment you will find products in well-known telecom providers, large companies and government, but also well-known hyperscalers such as Amazon AWS and Google are customers.

Steven Blees of Juniper told us about the company’s developments earlier this week, saying that the company has generated nearly equal revenue from its three markets so far—cloud, telecom, and enterprise. This is now changing and this is evident in the numbers where the latter is now the largest segment.

reverse inheritance

The company has made several acquisitions in recent years, including innovative Wi-Fi access point manufacturer Mist and session-based routing specialist 128 Technologies. Mist is the company co-founded by Bob Friday. This is the man behind Airespace, which was one of the first companies to bring Wi-Fi to market and was acquired by Cisco in 2005.

The AI technology behind Mist’s Wi-Fi products is increasingly found in Juniper.

You could call the Mist acquisition a reverse acquisition, according to Blees. The products of this company, like many other modern business Wi-Fi products, do not use hardware controllers, but are controlled from the cloud. Mist has extensive AI capabilities that allow administrators to keep an eye on everything and provide network performance and bug fixes. Although mist sauce is now ubiquitous, the JunOS operating system remains central. The brand also offers various white box options for infrastructure products.

Mist’s ideas are increasingly permeating the company’s products, which means other equipment can be managed this way as well. This is also reflected in Juniper’s current philosophy. Where ‘self-driving networking’ used to be the focus, now it speaks of its first networking experience. Blees: “Your network uptime can be great. If users have a crappy experience afterwards, it won’t do you any good.”

With Mist’s AI technology, the company manages to convince large customers, for example, American Walmart is replacing 250,000 access points with these products, and Amazon webshop also has them in their warehouses.

Focus on security

While until a few years ago Juniper Networks was still just a manufacturer at the core of the network, you can see it becoming a company that can offer a total solution, in part due to the acquisition of Mist and 128. security access point and everything in between.

The security side of Juniper is still a bit unclear

You’ll find SRX firewalls in its security portfolio at Juniper, but it may not be the company’s best-known product. Although the company can make smart combinations with Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), you can immediately see from the image below that the solution offered by the company can be improved. It looks messy and is clearly in transition. Erik van Harten, security expert at Blees and Juniper, makes it clear that Juniper is very focused on this and that security is an important pioneer. It is clear that Mist’s ease of use, insight and smart management are also part of it. Whether Juniper can simplify this by making it more transparent or by doing another inheritance: time will tell.
