The second wave of heat that hit Spain will reach its peak on Tuesday, July 18. Temperatures were expected to rise over the weekend and the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) confirmed that the start of the week would be the worst day. But on Wednesday, July 19, it will not subside and, although we will see a slight decrease, it will still be strongly felt.
But seriously, AEMET still can’t determine when the heat wave we’re going through will end. They explain this in their statement: “At the moment it is not possible to establish with certainty the end of this heat wave episode. The most likely scenario indicates a trend towards continued thermal decline, although temperatures will remain above normal for a few more days in areas of the southern half of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
At the moment, the temperature in part of the Spanish peninsula will begin to fall from Thursday June 13, and on Sunday July 23 in the center of the peninsula, it will rise. Of course, the below 30-degree numbers that were expected in regions like the community of Madrid early next week have disappeared, partly due to the effects of the heat wave we are experiencing.
Why is it impossible to determine the end of the heat wave that hit Spain in July?
One of the reasons why it is impossible to determine the end of the heat wave that is currently affecting much of the peninsula is due to the ridge of hot and dry air that is emerging in the Sahara. It is expected to move west, affecting various parts of the country as it approaches very warm air masses.
But the ridge is accompanied by suspended dust known as haze. This usually acts like an umbrella and reduces the heat. There is also the possibility that surface wind helps to soften the environment. But until the evolution of the meteorological phenomenon is clarified, it will not be clear when the abnormal heat will end.
It is also expected that these will be the days when Spanish records for the highest temperatures are broken. Experts calculated that this would happen in the upper Guadalquivir region, between Córdoba and Jaén.
