For years, hypnosis has been used as an attraction in shows where people are encouraged to act funny and view onions as a uniquely delicious delicacy.
However, the technique of changing the state of consciousness triggered by suggestion has been the subject of study for therapeutic purposes; to control chronic pain and treat depression and phobias.
However, not all people are suggestible, as a significant proportion of individuals cannot be hypnotized. But can this be changed?
Hypnosis and health
Hypnosis still maintains its mystery in many respects. An example of this statement is that not all people can be hypnotized. Researchers are trying to uncover whether there is a relationship between the functioning and structures of the brain and the tendency to be more receptive to technique.
In a study that has not yet been peer-reviewed and has not been published in preprint, a research group has found some connection between non-periodic waves of neuronal activity and increased susceptibility to hypnosis. For the team, People who can be suggested to hypnosis already have this feature from birth..
It is also known that this ability to integrate and alter states of consciousness triggered by hypnosis may be linked to a region of the brain known as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, when it acts in conjunction with the brain salience network.
But if there’s one thing our brain can do, it’s change. Researchers from Stanford University in the United States combined the two techniques in a study with patients with fibromyalgia.
The team subjected a sample of 80 patients, a group thought to have low-moderate suggestibility, to a series of transcranial magnetic stimulation (theta-bursts) that stimulated the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex region. This technique is noninvasive, painless and is used as a treatment method for patients with depression and even in post-stroke rehabilitation.
The results, published in the journal Nature Mental Health, showed a change in individuals’ sensitivity and they were more likely to be hypnotized. However, the effect was not permanent, lasting about an hour. For the team, the study was illuminating and provided an opportunity to learn about the possibility of a change, albeit temporary, in the acceptance of the hypnosis technique.
Focusing on controlling chronic pain caused by fibromyalgia, making patients more sensitive to the technique will help reduce medication control and increase the quality of life of these patients.
AND It is important to emphasize Hypnosis should only be performed by a trained and qualified professional.. Always look for information about professionals and their qualifications. Don’t fall for scams or expose yourself to risks.
