Spanish researchers have developed a new low-calorie sweetener with a sweetness level similar to the sugar we are used to. In addition, the innovation can stimulate the intestinal flora.

The developed product, created from natural resources, does not raise blood sugar. The finding was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

To create a new sweetener, scientists looked to natural sources for alternatives. Two stood out: galactooligosaccharides and mogrosides, found in breast milk and Luo Han Guo (monk fruit) fruits, respectively, from southern China.

But the problem is that none of them are good sweeteners on their own. Despite having the same nutritional value as sugar, galactooligosaccharides are tasteless. Mogrosides are too sweet for some consumers.

But by combining these molecules, the researchers were able to create a delicious sweetener. In addition, initial tests showed that the new ingredient has the ability to stimulate bacterial growth. bifidobacteria and lactobacillus from the gut.

Its pleasant taste and probiotic value may be attractive to the product. However, it must undergo clinical trials to evaluate its safety before it can be distributed on the shelves.

“This new ingredient may provide health benefits when evaluated in human studies by combining the sweetness and functionality of probiotic fiber,” the study authors wrote.
