Apple plans to de satellite link offered on the new iPhone 14 in some new countries by the end of the year, or at least no later than the first half of 2023. Currently, the feature is available exclusively in the US and Canada, where it will be offered for free for the first two years.

But let’s take a step back. The new iPhone 14 offers a feature that uses satellite connections for the first time. Is called Emergency SOS and allows you to send emergency messages in dangerous situations, when traditional mobile networks are not available. An example above all: think of a hiker who gets lost in the high mountains and no longer knows how to return or is seriously injured.

At the moment the satellite link it only serves this purpose: it’s a feature designed only for emergencies, so forget – at least for now – being able to use satellites (like Starlink’s) to watch Netflix or connect to Instagram.

The service will debut in November, but as previously mentioned, it will initially only be available in North America. According to the MacPrime website, this exclusivity will actually be very short-lived. Apple is already working on bringing the Emergency SOS feature to several other countries by the end of the year.

Then, in early 2023, the service will be expanded to another group of countries. At the moment we don’t know which countries are in the two lists, which is why we don’t know yet when satellite connectivity will also arrive in Italy. We will keep you informed as new information comes out.
