In chapter 7 of this first season, Dragon House fell into one of the mistakes that he already fell into Game of Thrones. During night scenes, many of us ran to see if our TV had broken down, causing the image to lose brightness. Later we saw that it was just an attempt to wrap us in the same darkness as the characters. A very noble goal, were it not for the sacrifice of opportunity our eyes could understand what was happening on the stage.

And this makes us ask ourselves the question: can the eyes really adapt to scenes like those we saw in Dragon House and earlier in Game of Thrones? The answer is complicated, as our eyes can adapt to the dark. We’ve all seen them during a night walk or when trying to see a meteor shower. However, there are some details that may interfere with this adaptation.

Understanding how all this happens can be very helpful. Not only to satisfy curiosity. Also know how best to look at the chapter and at least distinguish what is happening.

How do the eyes adapt to the dark?

The eyes can adapt to darkness in different ways, although the most important are mainly two.

On the one hand, they can shrink or dilate the pupil to allow more or less light to pass to the retina. This is possible thanks to two muscles: pupillary sphincter and dilator muscle. Thanks to them, it expands to let in as much light as possible when we are in a very dark situation, and shrinks to reduce the amount of light passing through it in very bright conditions. Thus, we can see as much as possible in the dark and our eyes are not damaged by too much light.

Another way to adapt the eyes to the dark is throughadapt the photosensitivity of the rods. these are some photoreceptor cells retinas with great sensitivity to light, which, in turn, become saturated with excessive illumination. They are able to change this sensitivity, capturing more or less light as needed. Now we’re talking about being surrounded by darkness. Perhaps Rainier and Damon in the beach scene adapted their pupils in this way. At least they would have adapted if the scene hadn’t been filmed in broad daylight. But what about the ones we see Dragon House on our TVs?

How to adapt the screen to the “Dragon House”

It is important to note that if the scene is as dark as in Dragon Housebut we are in illuminated environmentOur eyes don’t adapt to the dark. explained it hypertext Dr. Alberto Lozano, ophthalmologist. “If a ambient light it’s so much more powerful than the image on the screen, the eye isn’t going to adapt,” he says. “It will take more screen reflection what other matter.”

This means that it can be helpful to at least deal with these scenes, watch TV in the dark. However, not everything depends on us, since the variety of screen shades is also important.

“Then there is a gray screen rendering limit. If it is completely black, there will be no contrast to capture. The eye adapts because the rods are capable of being excited by even a single photon, but if there is practically no difference from one pixel to another, they will be able to distinguish contrasts.”

So you can also play with your image colors. There are many types of screens offering very different possibilities. But even in the oldest ones, we can vary the backlight, brightness and contrast. Especially the first one can be loaded little by little until you find the point where the images are better distinguished. If the situation had not improved when reaching the maximum, we would have already tried with brightness and background. It is important to give our eyes those pixels of light that they can latch onto in order to adapt our vision to the dark.

Will have to wait for the next chapter Dragon House to see if they repeat the same pattern they already used in scenes from Game of Thrones mythical as battle for winterfell. Maybe it was something isolated, or maybe it will happen again. Just in case, it is better to remember these tips. Our eyes are very good at adapting to the dark, but sometimes you need to help them.
