A review of studies published last month by researchers at the University of Medical Sciences in Birjan, Iran, pooled data from 40 studies investigating the effects of cinnamon on cognitive function. The inner bark of the Cinnamomum tree, which is known for seasoning some types of meat and for making sweets and bread, is also offered as a medicine.

The article was published in the scientific journal Nutritional Neuroscience.

Many studies have shown that cinnamon and its bioactive compounds have properties that can affect brain function and affect some human behavioral characteristics. In this way, the Iranian study attempts to review all previous studies that have found a relationship between cinnamon and its effects on memory and learning.

Some of these studies attribute cognitive benefits and anti-inflammatory, anticancer and immunomodulatory properties to the spice. Others give cinnamon a neuroprotective effect against brain diseases, thanks to a compound called cinnamaldehyde, which inhibits the buildup of beta-amyloid plaques, an important biomarker of Alzheimer’s disease.

In September 2021, the researchers collected 2,625 studies from different databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. Of these, 40 were included in the systematic review as they met the required criteria. 33 of the selected total were work in vivofive in a laboratory settingand only two clinical studies.

In these two studies involving humans, researchers looked at cinnamon extract or powder. In the first, scientists found that 40 days of chewing cinnamon gum positively affected teens’ memory. In the other clinical study, no significant changes in memory were observed when cinnamon was taken by mouth.

Asked by about search Medical News TodayNutritionists who did not participate in the review noted that because it included only two clinical trials (one showed no positive effect), a randomized controlled trial should be conducted before confirming the possible benefits of cinnamon.
