Colombia is a very seismically active region, so an earthquake can occur at any time. According to calculations by the Colombian Geological Service, about 2,500 earthquakes are recorded on average over the course of a month, but “many of them go undetected.”

A tremor is unpredictable. For this reason, there are those who wonder why Google warns Android mobile phones to the most felt earthquakes within seconds. How does it work?
According to the tech giant, all Smartphones have a small accelerometer that detects when an earthquake may occur.
This signal is sent very quickly to a Google server which collects other signals from other mobile phones in the same area. In this way, “the world’s largest earthquake detection network” is created.
So Google can know that something unusual is happening, especially a flicker to alert those with an Android device.
“The earthquake is predictable, but no. The earthquake has already happened and the Google alert system kicks in as soon as it does. It takes a few seconds for that,” explained John Makario Londoño, technical director for geological hazards at SGC.
“Those further away from the epicenter will be able to receive the alert a few seconds earlier so they can be safe when needed,” Google said.

Therefore, it is not a ‘guess’. Google does not predict earthquakes: “It is able to generate early warnings only thanks to the signals in motion changes detected by your mobile phone.”
The option works for free and its main purpose is to support the authorities and people to prevent deaths in these natural events.
This is step by step to enable earthquake notifications:
1. Open phone settings.
2. Press ‘Safety & Emergency’ and then ‘Earthquake Alerts’.
3. If you can’t find ‘Security & emergency’, press ‘Location’ then ‘Advanced’ then select ‘Earthquake alerts’.

Remember that you should always keep your mobile phone’s location or GPS active so that an alert can come when an earthquake occurs.
There are two types of warnings:
-Danger: Warns users of an earthquake of 3 and 4 degrees, which is considered weak or mild on the MMI scale.
– To take action: Warns of moderate or strong jolts of grade 5 or higher on the MMI scale. It is louder and tells users to bend over and find a safe place..
– Tremor saved his life: This was the rescue of a tortured woman in Soacha.
– Trembling: Find out why a sound is heard before it even occurs.
– Such is life in Los Santos, Colombia’s most trembling town.
