Filmmaker Chris Williams spoke about the inspirations of The Sea Beast, citing 16th and 17th century illustrations dedicated to sea creatures. The director defined this as follows:
The kind of story I’ve always wanted to tell. It is a story of great adventures, in which the protagonists venture into unexplored places. And in a way, that’s what I do.
