IMAX published a poster celebrating the 40th anniversary of ET the alien which will hit theaters on August 12, marking the anniversary, for the first time in IMAX. The feature film was released in 1982 and hit the box office that year.

Here’s the IMAX poster for ET, the alien birthday. Currently, the release has been announced for the United States, but it is not clear whether it will be an international distribution and therefore could also hit Italy.

Below is the announcement from IMAX:

We are excited to partner with Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment to provide audiences with an opportunity to experience this iconic film for the first time in IMAX. Steven Spielberg redefined modern cinema by entering a new era with it, and the IMAX experience has expanded around the world in the wake of works like ET and Jaws.

Recall that ET was released in the wake of hit movies made by Steven Spielberg, such as Jaws (released in theaters in 1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (released in 1977), and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).

The success of ET was so overwhelming that it became the highest grossing film ever at the time, only to be surpassed eleven years later by another Steven Spielberg production: Jurassic Park.
