The class action lawsuit was signed by Le Figaro, Le Monde, Courrier International, Le Nouvel Obs, as well as Les Echos and Le Parisien, owned by Arnault. The social network is accused of violating French law, which requires payment of royalties for the use of any copyright-protected content.

In reference to this law, in March 2024, French regulators imposed a fine of 250 million euros on Google for using content from French media in the training process of the Bard neural network without proper notification.

Last week, France’s largest news agency, AFP, filed a lawsuit against X. The first meeting date is set for May 2025, according to Fortune. The AFP and other French media that filed the lawsuit asked the court in May to impose provisional measures against the social network. The court granted his request, forcing X to provide commercial information to determine the amount of compensation, but the social network ignored the order.

On November 12, several French publishers sued Microsoft over a similar matter. The media accused the American corporation of using millions of materials written by its journalists without proper permission and without paying royalties.

In addition to Les Echos and Le Parisien, Arnault owns LVMH, which produces alcohol, clothing, luxury goods and other premium products under the brands Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Guerlain, Moët & Chandon, Hennessy and others. Forbes estimates the fortune of the billionaire and his family at $155 billion.
