According to the bio on the site of Sean S. Cunninghamthe director of the first Friday 13, it looks like, after more than a decade of inactivity, the franchise is poised to produce a new feature film, as reported on the site. The new film is expected to be released in 2023.
Sean S. Cunningham’s bio-information states:
Sean S. Cunningham directed and produced the groundbreaking horror film Friday the 13th and created the iconic villain Jason Voorhees. The film spawned 12 feature films, with the thirteenth in the pipeline for next year.
This information comes shortly after producer Roy Lee revealed that news of the Friday 13 franchise should arrive by the end of the year. These are his words:
I really want to talk about this. You may have news on that front later this year.
Recall that the franchise has been blocked for years due to a character rights dispute involving director Sean Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller. During the copyright battle between the two on Friday the 13th, the former claimed that the screenwriter had commissioned the original script, while the latter claimed it was an independent work. The lawsuit was won by Miller, although Cunningham owns the rights to adult Jason Voorhees.
