However, the most compelling reason is to perpetuate the fact that the blood of the two most powerful dynasties on the continent maintains a weak and clumsy rule. “It won’t happen right away. Also not soon, but the king will not become an old man, ”says Otto Hightower with pragmatic confidence.
The one who was the Hand of the two Targaryen kings leaves the stage. However, he leaves fear in his wake. “Raise Aegon to rule,” he urges his daughter. A queen surrounded by intrigues, isolated, lonely and suffering. One that also just discovered that it could be anything more than a privileged queen capable of bearing heirs.

A widowed prince, a young queen, and a wounded king consort

Tragic boyfriends in the midst of fear
Reynira took her engagement as a national goal. So much so that the political union in Dragon House includes implicit negotiations with Laynor, her cousin and future husband. “Each will be able to satisfy his appetites as soon as we fulfill the duty that is expected of both”the heiress says without hesitation. Cunning and vicious, she knows that the eyes of the future king-consort are turned only to the knight next to her, Ser Joffrey Lonmouth.
Just like those princesses contemplating Ser Christon with kindness and complicity. But while Ser Lonemouth agrees that Laynor will have to serve the crown at the cost of her life, it is not so easy for the Protector Knight. “We can run away,” says the guard, now Reynira’s lover. “You can marry for love”. However, the princess realizes what is expected of her and refuses. “I took a vow of chastity,” despairs his patron, confused and depressed. “I did it with a crown,” the heiress replies.
So the marriage will be celebrated with all the pomp required by the future monarch of the Seven Kingdoms. But also in the eyes of snub-nosed lovers, those who seek power and perhaps revenge.
The horrors of the fate of hopeless kings and queens in Dragon House
Reynira and Laenor readily accept their fate. Viserys, in a clumsy speech, announces a political settlement that will uphold his crown. The weakness of the king becomes more and more obvious. So much so that an enraged Alicente interrupts her speech and slowly walks through a hall full of nobles dressed from head to toe in the colors of her House. “Green beacon in battle,” they whisper around him. House Hightower rejoices in the birth of a child queen, mother of kings, and is now aware of its place. “You can count on our support, no matter what position history takes you,” one of her relatives tells the monarch with obvious satisfaction.
But the Targaryen wedding bears the stigma of chaotic and uncontrollable dragon blood. The tension is unbearable, the discomfort is obvious; while the king hesitates, the queen looks elsewhere. The young suitors dance hand in hand as their lovers meet face to face for the first time.
“We must keep our secrets from each other,” says Ser Longmouth Christon Cole. The king’s consort’s mistress maliciously discovered the knight’s lonely love for the heiress. Damon then dances with the brash Rayneera, reminding her that the wild throbs in her blood. “Ideal husband. You will get tired of this link”he whispers provocatively. The music gets faster and faster as the script rewrites history fire and blood to show the horrors of frustration and greed. In Westeros, there is no happiness without pain.
In the end, spilled blood is drunk by rats
The chapter closes with a clear allegory of the duality between tragedy and power that defines House Targaryen. Hurt and wounded by anger, Ser Christon kills the favorite of a very young king consort. The mutilated body is in the middle of the room, and her lover is crying. an omen of what is to come.
“Father, blacksmith, warrior,” the promised ones say in an undertone, frightened by violence. Voices have something sinister in an empty room, alliances grow weaker in Dragon House. “Mother, mistress, old woman,” the heiress adds in a trembling voice.
Outside, Ser Christon is about to commit suicide in shame. But the queen stops him, perhaps to find a spy and ally? “I’m hers and she’s mine,” Laynor says between shudders. Weak and wounded king consort. “From this day until my last days,” Reynira says softly. Debt fulfilled.
The image disappears, revealing Ser Longmouth’s blood, still fresh on the ground. The rat drinks from it. A tragic prediction of marriage, which is the first step towards a brutal civil war.
