Jasmine Trinca returns to the Cannes 2022 Croisette with a double commitment: member of the international jury of the 75th edition and director of a feature film for the first time, Marcel!presented in the official selection in the section Séances spéciales, and will be released in Italian cinemas on June 1, distributed by Vision Distribution: here are trailers and posters of the film.
One of the most popular performers at the Cannes Film Festival, seeing her debut with Nanni Moretti’s The Son’s Room, Palme d’Or in 2001, and subsequently winning her best performer of Sergio Castellitto’s Un Certain Regard for Fortunata, the filmmaker now returns to the festival with this Cinemaundici and Totem Atelier production with Rai Cinema, in collaboration with Phon Films and Vision Distribution.
Trinca says:
It all starts with a photo. It depicted my mother holding my hand on the edge of a forest. Behind us a sunny landscape, but in front of us? The color of that photo I would have defined the color of memory. Not out of nostalgia, like a sepia color photo, but an indefinable and nuanced color, burned by the sun, just crossed and inspired by the “dark forest”, ready to welcome and protect that step in two directions.
Between dream and reality. This is where this movie is located. A fairy tale or rather a fantastic adaptation of the experience, trying to understand, to expel, to make it universal. Dirty clothes that are not washed at home but become flags to wave, programmatic hymns: “We owe life to art”. After all, all that experience, that heavy luggage that you can’t leave behind, will also have served something. To make a movie. But no. Nothing is more important and fleeting than life. Not even a film that lasts (or maybe not). So life is owed to life.
Here’s the synopsis of the film, starring Alba Rohrwacher, Maayane Conti, Giovanna Ralli, Umberto Orsini, Dario Cantarelli, Valentina Cervi, Valeria Golino, and Giuseppe Cederna:
A little girl loves her mother, but her mother loves Marcel, her dog. An unpredictable event will take them on a journey, bringing them closer and revealing to them, beyond all pain, the great and secret ways of love.
