At nearly 16 inches tall and 12 inches wide, the PlayStation 5 is one of the largest consoles Sony has ever made. Hence the general complaint of buyers: where should I put this junk?

For this reason, the gamer community is waiting like water in May for Sony to release its traditional version of Slim. a variant as powerful as the original console but in a much smaller form factor.

The fact is that in the Japanese headquarters of the company The plans at the moment are not to create a new console, but to solve the stock problems that its PlayStation 5 suffers from. (like all semiconductor products).

WORLD’S FIRST PlayStation 5 slim

And if you’re one of those potential customers waiting for Sony to release their PS5 Slim, we’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news is that PlayStation hasn’t announced anything yet. The good news is that Matt from DIY Perks has created his own miniature version.

The thickness of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is 92mm. Matt’s ambitious goal was to reduce the thickness of the console to 20mm, or 78% less volume.

For comparison, a typical DVD case is 15mm thick, meaning Matt’s PS5 Slim is only 5mm thicker than this one. Impressive, right?

This meant that Matt got rid of everything from the case to the heatsinks to achieve the desired thickness. The only component he saved from the original PlayStation 5 was the motherboard, as without it the project wouldn’t have been possible anyway.

PS5 analysis, Sony’s next generation console

Youtuber created a water block for cooling the motherboardflash memory, power circuits, VRMs, and dedicated heatsinks for other components such as GDDR6 chips.

He also made a brass box for the project. Admittedly, the copper sheets alone are worth more than the PlayStation 5. So this is a project designed for scientific purposes, not for consumer education.

The original PlayStation 5 power supply provides 31A at 12V, which Matt replaced with a 750W HP DP5-750RB A power supply. It provides up to 62.5A at 12V, which is more than enough to power the PlayStation 5 and the water cooling circuit.

Matt’s first attempt ended badly as the console froze. during its testing and consequently refused to ignite. Dissatisfied with his failure, the jack of all trades found another PlayStation 5 console and finally realized his project.

In addition to being thinner than the original PlayStation 5, Matt also wanted to keep the operating temperature down.and this is where your custom water cooling circuit comes in handy.

PS5 Slim is not only thinner, but also cooler

Added three temperature sensors to measure AMD SoC, memory and VRM. He ran Horizon Forbidden West for several hours. and registered 46 degrees Celsius on the SoC.

Since the temperature sensor is not inside the SoC, it estimated the temperature to be around 65 degrees Celsius. The memory recorded a temperature of 52 degrees, while the VRM only reached 44 degrees.

Matt compared his results to Gamers Nexus heat tests for the PlayStation 5 out of the box. This ranked 75th for SoC, 95th for memory, and 71st for VRM. In comparison, Matt’s PlayStation 5 Slim showed a 13% cooler SoC, 45% colder memory, and a 38% colder VRM.

The release of the official PlayStation 5 Slim is a matter of time. And while the next console will be thinner than the original, we don’t expect it to be the same tiny box that Matt created.
