On Friday, May 5th, large numbers of Colombians saw and caught the lunar eclipse known as the ‘Blood Moon’ with their cell phones. The satellite turns red because “the sun’s rays are refracted as they pass through the atmosphere,” the European Sosthern Observatory said. Here we tell you everything you need to know about the event.

Internet users shared postcards of the night through social networks. Many were surprised by the Moon’s properties.

These are some images captured:

According to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), the Moon revolves around the Earth every 29 and a half days. Eclipses only occur at the Full Moon and only if the satellite “passes part of the shadow” of our planet.

In simple terms, when an eclipse occurs, the Moon can take on a reddish, silvery hue or be half dark. This is due to the types of eclipses classified.

In this May 5 example, the Moon “falls in the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, called the full shadow.” It becomes more reddish when in this industry, which is why many call it the ‘Blood Moon’.
