On the territory of the radio-astrophysical observatory in the Badary region in the Republic of Buryatia, a multi-wave radioheliograph was built – the second object of the National Heliogeophysical Complex for the study of near space and near-Earth space in Russia.

This device, which went into operation in experimental mode, is currently the only radioheliograph in the world – a telescope that observes the Sun in the radio range. Experts say that a similar one has been created in China, but they haven’t been able to put it into operation there yet.

The final commissioning of the radioheliograph is scheduled for the end of 2023. The device, which consists of 526 antennas, covers the range of three to 24 gigahertz and allows scientists to create 3D models of space around the Sun. Sergey Olemskoy, First Vice-President of the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that scientists took the first images of the solar corona from two intervals.

The new radioheliograph will replace the old one, built in 1986 and now decommissioned. The design of the new vehicle began in 2013, and construction work began in 2018. The cost of the plant amounted to 2.5 billion rubles.

The next stage in the creation of the National Heliogeophysical Complex will be the construction of a coronagraph telescope, scheduled for commissioning in 2030. In addition, it will also include a radar system, a set of passive optical instruments, a mesostratospheric lidar, a heating plant and a control center.
