This Monday afternoon (5), Apple’s WWDC 2023 conference was held to make the news coming in 2023 public. The company has announced the anticipated iOS 17, and as with every launch of a new Operating System (OS), some older iPhones will be “deprecated”.
Such moves by the company are already commonplace in the hardware industry. Every year, Apple releases new software upgrades, but eventually puts old phones aside. This makes these devices more susceptible to attacks from unwanted programs such as viruses.
However, this does not mean that “discontinued” iPhones will stop working. Anyone who already owns any of the devices listed below will be able to continue using their mobile phone. For example, the company continues to frequently update older versions of iOS to devices when critical flaws are discovered.
Which iPhones won’t get iOS 17?
In 2022, Apple put the iPhone 7 line in a mental asylum due to the arrival of iOS 16. Now, with iOS 17, the natural way – and there is already speculation – is the official discontinuation of support for the iPhone 8 line by the Cupertino company. That’s exactly what happened during the presentation, as the new OS requires at least the A12 Bionic chip.
Check out the affected models:
-
iPhone 8;
-
iPhone 8 Plus;
-
iPhone X.
Launched in 2017, the iPhone 8 series wasn’t the company’s most revolutionary device, and it brought more modest evolutions. The structure was made of glass on the back and even had a pressure-sensitive “Start” button. The most robust model, the iPhone 8 Plus, again had a 12 MP camera, A11 Bionic processor and a retina HD display up to 5.5 inches.
The iPhone X was Apple’s first phone with Face ID and a more immersive display. Launched with the A11 Bionic chip, the device has created a new design line that has been exploited and developed up to the current generation mobile phones. It was also the company’s first model to feature an OLED display.
Which iPhones will update to iOS 17?
On the other hand, the list of iPhones compatible with the new iOS 17 is still huge. Models compatible with devices using the A12 Bionic chip are:
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12
- iphone 12 small
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iphone 13
- iphone 13 small
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
- iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation)
