Scientists from Ohio University managed to get a licensed image of a unique atom. This opens up incredible new opportunities for materials science, medicine and research in the field of ecology.

It is worth noting that the imaging of atoms has happened before. For this, scanning probe microscopes were used, where probing was performed by an electrically charged needle tip. Unfortunately, this approach is not required.

Researchers need not only to see individual atoms, but also to identify their chemical state. The resolution of modern installations is high, but cannot exceed 10,000 atoms, which does not correspond to the consumption of scientists. The problem was solved by a large number of terbium and iron atoms in the matrix of ring-shaped supramolecules.

The scientists then applied a new technique that combines the mechanics of a sanitizing probe microscope with the X-rays of a synchrotron. The detection technology absorbs individual electrons at the level of the nucleus. This image can be called “atom compress”.

According to scientists, the technology they have created can change the world, because with its help it will be possible to determine the chemical state of atoms. For example, such an approach will make it possible to create new drugs, a method of production for the development of mankind.
